Where is the hantavirus cruise ship now? Take a look

The MV Hondius cruise ship has been sailing towards Tenerife in the Canary Islands, where it is expected to dock on Sunday.

The ship’s remaining passengers will receive repatriation flights home from the island, provided they are not displaying any symptoms of hantavirus.

How many hantavirus cases are there?

Various health bodies around the world have been giving regular updates on the number of cases they have recorded and are monitoring.

As we’ve been reporting, the UK just this morning reported a new suspected case of a British national in Tristan da Cunha.

A Dutch flight attendant has also tested negative after she was suspected of infection.

The World Health Organisation is keeping on top of the big picture.

We expect another update from them today, which will likely take this morning’s developments into account.

But until then, these are the latest figures as of yesterday (it’s important to note they may, for now, show a slight discrepancy with national health bodies):

  • There have been five confirmed cases of hantavirus identified so far that are linked to the outbreak, according to the WHO.
  • A further three suspected cases have also been identified.
  • Three people have died after being aboard the cruise ship during the outbreak. This includes a Dutch couple and a German citizen. It’s important to note that not all the deaths have yet been confirmed as having had hantavirus infections.
  • At least six people are in hospital after coming into possible contact with the virus. Three people – two British and Dutch crew members, and a German passenger – were evacuated from the MV Hondius. Two were flown to receive treatment in the Netherlands, while the third was transferred to Germany. Three further individuals – including a British national – are receiving treatment in hospitals in Switzerland, the Netherlands and South Africa.
  • Some 149 people were on the cruise ship when it set off from southern Argentina on 1 April.
  • That included 23 British people – 19 passengers and four crew members.
