People in at least three US states being monitored – reports

People in at least three US states are being monitored for potential hantavirus infections, according to reports.

The New York Times reported none has shown signs of illness, and that Georgia is monitoring two residents and California an undisclosed number.

In a statement to Reuters, the Georgia Department of Public Health said it’s monitoring two people who had returned home after leaving the cruise ship.

Both are in good health, show no signs of infection and are following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In a separate statement, the Arizona Department of Health Services said it’s monitoring one resident who was a passenger on the ship. That person is not showing symptoms.

The CDC said:

“The Department of State is leading a coordinated, whole-of-government response including direct contact with passengers, diplomatic coordination, and engagement with domestic and international health authorities.”

The risk to the American public is extremely low, the CDC added.

Hantavirus, as a reminder, usually spreads through contact with infected rodents and human-to-human transmission is uncommon.
