Former Conservative ministers Sir Robert Buckland and Paul Scully have admitted they did not do enough while in government as sub-postmasters were fighting for justice.
Sir Robert served as solicitor general from 2014 to 2019, while Mr Scully served as postal affairs minister after the 2019 court ruling that vindicated sub-postmasters.
Asked if they did enough to address the vast miscarriage of justice, Sir Robert said: “I think all of us could have done more.
“If we’d known the full extent and seen the extent of this miscarriage of justice, I think we could have done more.”
He said establishing the statutory inquiry was an “important moment”, but added: “We can do more, we are doing more, and it’s right that we restore these innocent victims to the best position that we can.”
Mr Scully said that more could be done by the government now, but said he wanted a statutory inquiry at the time so the process would move quickly.
“It’s taking way too long – we need to get it done now,” he said.
Sir Robert said he approaches the issue with “deep humility”, and adds that this is a “stain on the entire system of justice… in this country”.
Mr Scully said they deserve “proper life-changing money” in compensation for what happened.
