Ukrainian couples to wed remotely on video calls

Couples will be able to get married remotely using a government eportal called Diia under new plans.

The feature is aimed at helping deployed soldiers to get married if they’re not able to physically be with their partner.

Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s minister of digital transformation, said the feature would be “unique to the whole world”.

A number of security measures would be put in place and the process will require multiple steps of verification, he said.

Just after the invasion began, a bill was passed to allow couples in the police and military to get married remotely during martial law by submitting an application to their immediate commander or supervisor.
