UK Labour’s shadow paymaster general, Jonathan Ashworth, has responded to questions whether the Post Office is still fit for purpose in the wake of the Horizon IT scandal.
He said the TV drama that aired earlier this month made him cry and his “blood boil”.
“We’ve got to get to the bottom of this, what went wrong – people have got to be held to account,” he said.
Asked if anyone should be prosecuted, Mr Ashworth replied: “Yes, everything needs to be on the table.”
He said the subpostmasters who have been “put through hell” need full exoneration and proper compensation “quickly”.
Pushed on whether the Post Office is still fit for purpose, he replied that the brand has been “damaged hugely by this scandal”, and that “surprised” people given that the brand has been so trusted.
“They’ve got to work hard to rebuild trust in their brand.”
Mr Ashworth also said campaigner Alan Bates should “absolutely” get a knighthood, and described him as a “remarkable man”.
