UK government held crisis meetings as it ‘prepared for Putin to fire nuclear weapons’

Vladimir Putin was so close to launching a nuclear weapon in Ukraine in October 2022 that the government held emergency meetings over how the fallout could affect the UK, according to an updated biography of ex-prime minister Liz Truss.

Truss reportedly spent some of her last days in office studying weather maps and preparing for a possible spread of radiation into the UK, the book Out of the Blue claims

The fears were apparently based on “exquisite” US intelligence saying there was a 50% chance Russia could deploy a nuclear weapon in Ukraine or test one over the Black Sea.

The book says Truss spent “numerous hours studying satellite weather data and wind directions” over fears the “wrong weather patterns” could have a “direct fall-out effect on Britain”.

A separate book by veteran US journalist Bob Woodward, published last month, also details how the US intelligence community concluded there was a “50% chance” Putin could resort to nuclear weapons in autumn 2022.
