Political analyst and founding National Secretary of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Professor Udenta Udenta, has criticised recent amendments to Nigeria’s Electoral Act, alleging that the changes were deliberately crafted to improve President Bola Tinubu’s chances of retaining office in the 2027 general election.

Udenta argued that the National Assembly did not act independently in passing the legislation, insisting that the amendment primarily serves the political interests of the current administration rather than the broader democratic process. According to him, the development raises fresh concerns about the integrity of the country’s electoral framework ahead of the next election cycle.

Speaking on the issue, Udenta said:

“The National Assembly was bought to get Tinubu back to power.”

The political analyst further maintained that electoral reforms should be driven by the need to strengthen transparency, fairness and public confidence rather than partisan considerations. He contended that any law perceived to favour a particular political interest could undermine trust in future elections.

His remarks come months after President Bola Tinubu signed the amended Electoral Act into law following its passage by the National Assembly, with the government describing the legislation as part of efforts to improve Nigeria’s electoral system ahead of future polls.
