Raffi Freedman-Gurspan has made history after she was announced the top liaison to the LGBT community in the White House this week. Making history is not new to her. Last year, she also became the first trans employee in President Obama’s administration.
Previously, Ms Freedman worked as an “outreach and recruitment director for presidential personnel” in the Office of Personnel.
She was also a policy adviser for the National Centre for Transgender Equality’s (NCTE) racial and economic justice initiative, before that.
“President Obama has long said he wants his Administration to look like the American people. I have understood this to include transgender Americans.
“A transgender person was inevitably going to work in the White House,” NCTE executive director Mara Keisling said.
“That the first transgender appointee is a transgender woman of color is itself significant.”
Another prominent member of the community who hopes to find herself in the Oval Office is former Olympian Caitlyn Jenner.
