England’s strong recent history at international tournaments will put Thomas Tuchel under pressure to deliver impressive results at the 2026 World Cup.
“There’s a high bar to meet – Gareth Southgate, while he didn’t bring a trophy back to England, did reach back-to-back Euros finals,” Rob Harris reports from Wembley.
Tuchel spent much of his news conference defending his squad selections, but also discussing the importance of the England team’s spirit, Harris said.
“He’s been really assessing, in his year and a half or so, those players who fit best into the team environment, if you’re not playing all the time, how you are within the camp.”
‘Shocked and gutted’: How Maguire reacted to World Cup snub
One of the notable absentees from the England World Cup squad is Harry Maguire.
The Manchester United defender played a leading role at previous major tournaments for the Three Lions, and withdrew from the Euro 2024 squad due to injury.
The 33-year-old could not hide his disappointment after he was told he would not be making the squad yesterday.
“I was confident I could of played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had,” Maguire wrote on social media.
“I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision.
” I’ve loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years.
” I wish the players all the best this summer.”
Thomas Tuchel said he was “surprised” by the comments in his press conference earlier.
