It will be a hot and humid World Cup – so Tuchel has a plan

The England boss is asked whether rotating his team will be a priority in the World Cup group stages.

“The challenge is clear – it will be hot, it will be humid, we can have a game in [high] altitude, it’s one match more than usual because of the amount of teams,” Thomas Tuchel says.

“So yeah, would it make sense to rotate? Yes. And does it show also a level of trust to the players that we trust them? Yes.

“I think we have a significant amount of players who hope to start – it’s more than just 11, so we will be able to rotate on a high level.

“Hopefully we can do this without losing momentum, without losing connections between the players.”

Did Tuchel speak to the last England boss for advice?

Among a number of other questions, Thomas Tuchel is asked if he had spoken to his predecessor Sir Gareth Southgate for any advice ahead of the World Cup.

“No,” Tuchel responds.

“We trusted our own experience, we trusted our own sports psychologist that we have with us, we trusted our observations throughout the camps and didn’t speak with other coaches about it.”

Three surprise picks in Tuchel’s squad

There are certainly a few picks in the England squad that will come as a shock to many.

Jarell Quansah

A graduate of Liverpool’s academy, Quansah joined German side Bayer Leverkusen at the start of the season.

The 23-year-old defender has only played for England once, in a victory against Albania last November, but was part of the previous squad in March.

Djed Spence

Spence has been part of a Tottenham squad that could still be relegated from the Premier League this weekend.

Having made his debut in September last year, he has just four caps for the Three Lions to his name.

“He was excellent in every single match that he played for us,” Tuchel said this morning.

“He’s the fastest player in our squad and he loves to defend one-on-ones, and that is just the characteristic that, I would say, makes him a standout fullback for us and a bit of a special, special fullback for us.”

Ivan Toney

Toney is the only member of the squad playing outside of Europe, currently turning out for Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia.

He has played just seven minutes of international football since he was part of England’s Euro 2024 squad.

However, the 30-year-old is renowned for his ability to score penalties, which could be crucial if England reach the knockout stages of the tournament.

And that’s part of the reason behind Tuchel’s call, alongside his threat in the box and aerial ability…
