Steve McManaman slams Liverpool star after UCL performance against Ajax

Darwin Nunez

Former Liverpool star, Steve McManaman, has hit out at new signing Darwin Nunez for committing an unnecessary foul in the Reds’ Champions League 2-1 home win against Ajax on Tuesday.

Liverpool recorded their first continental win of the 2022-2023 season in their second Group A clash on Tuesday night at Anfield.

Two goals from Mohamed Salah and Joel Matip gave Jurgen Klopp’s side the victory over Ajax as Mohammed Kudus’ goal was not enough to salvage a draw for the visitors.

Nunez, who joined Liverpool from Benfica in a deal worth up to £85 million this summer, also featured as a second-half substitute.

The 23-year-old attacker failed to convert a great chance minutes before the winner and also fouled Jurrien Timber with unnecessary pressure on the centre-back.

Speaking on BT Sport, McManaman expressed his frustration after Nunez committed a foul on the Dutch defender in the final 10 minutes of the match.

McManaman said: “What on earth is he doing that for? I know he’s eager to get into the game, but he’s going nowhere near Timber. And he gives him the opportunity to fall over.”
