SPAIN FLOODS: Crowd carries supplies to help flood-affected areas

People have come out in force to help the worst-hit areas of Valencia.

Some carried shovels and brooms to help clear away debris, while others had bottles of water.

As we reported earlier, the mayor of Alfafar has warned residents are not getting enough aid.

Some people say they have been left without food, water and medicine.

Number killed in floods rises to at least 205

The number of deaths in this week’s flash floods has risen to at least 202 in Valencia alone, according to regional authorities.

That takes the total number of deaths to at least 205, as three deaths were previously reported in neighbouring regions.

Emergency responders have been searching for missing people throughout the day, checking cars and buildings.

Temporary morgue set up in Valencia

The number of deaths in the Valencia region has risen to 202 – taking the total death toll in Spain to at least 205.

A temporary morgue has now been set up on the outskirts of the city of Valencia, according to emergency services.

The first bodies began to arrive early this morning.

The number of deaths has prompted anger among residents, with some people accusing authorities of not warning people soon enough about the dangers posed by the storm.

More heavy rain and thunderstorms forecast

Heavy rain and thunderstorms continue to affect parts of Spain today, especially the northeast and southwest, along with the Balearic Islands.

Yellow and amber weather warnings are in place there, including a rare red rain warning for the Huelva region in the south, which is valid until 2pm on Friday.

Twelve-hour rainfall totals may reach 140mm.

The weekend will bring further heavy showers and thunderstorms, but they will be less widespread than recently and mainly confined to the east.

Next week looks much more settled for Spain with mostly dry conditions, but the threat of heavy rain will return to the Balearic Islands from the middle of the week.
