Smoke has been seen rising from the Barbados-flagged bulk carrier True Confidence off Yemen’s southern coast near Aden, a US defence official has told the Reuters news agency.
The official, who wished to remain anonymous, said a lifeboat had also been seen in the water near the ship, without providing further details.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency reported earlier that a merchant vessel had been damaged in an attack south of Yemen and coalition forces were supporting it.
An entity declaring itself to be the “Yemeni Navy” ordered the ship to alter course 57 nautical miles southwest of Aden, British security firm Ambrey said.
