Sevastopol residents have been told “not to worry” if they hear noises coming from the city centre following Ukraine’s attack over the weekend.
Mikhail Razvozhaev, the governor of Sevastopol, clarified the “dull sound” that could be heard today is a result of a “controlled detonation” of structures at the Black Sea Fleet headquarters, he said on the Telegram messaging app.
In a later post, Mr Razvozhaev said the next controlled detonation to collapse emergency structures in the Black Sea Fleet building will be carried out at 11.25am.
“Work will continue until approximately 14.00. If you hear loud noises, don’t worry. The situation is under control.”
For context: Ukraine launched another missile attack on Sevastopol on the occupied Crimean Peninsula on Saturday, a day after an attack on the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet that left a serviceman missing and the main building smouldering.
The city was put under an air raid alert for about an hour after debris from intercepted missiles fell near a pier, Mr Razvozhayev said. He later added that another missile fragment fell in a park in northern Sevastopol, parts of which had to be cordoned off. Ferry traffic in the area was also halted and later resumed.
