United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that Washington’s objective is not to remove Iran’s government but to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons and threatening regional stability. His remarks came as the U.S. administration responded to growing international debate over its policy toward Iran following recent military tensions.
Rubio explained that the United States remains focused on addressing security concerns rather than seeking to overthrow Iran’s leadership. He stressed that American actions are intended to counter what Washington considers threats posed by Iran’s nuclear ambitions and military activities, while avoiding a broader conflict.
Speaking about the administration’s position, Rubio said:
“We’re not looking for regime change.”
He further emphasized that the United States wants Iran to choose diplomacy instead of confrontation, adding that the country’s future should ultimately be determined by its own citizens rather than foreign governments.
Rubio also stated:
“If they want a civil nuclear program, there is a way to do that.”
The Secretary of State reiterated that the U.S. remains open to a peaceful resolution, provided Iran complies with international obligations regarding its nuclear activities. According to him, Washington’s priority is ensuring that Tehran does not acquire a nuclear weapon while preserving stability in the Middle East.
His comments come amid continued diplomatic efforts and heightened international attention on Iran’s nuclear programme, with global powers closely monitoring developments and encouraging renewed negotiations aimed at reducing regional tensions.
