Romanian President Nicusor Dan said Tuesday he has begun consultations on forming a new government after lawmakers passed a no-confidence motion against the government led by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.
The consultations will start an informal level before moving to formal meetings with parliamentary group delegations, Dan said in a video statement.
While ruling out the possibility of early elections, he promised to form a new government “within a reasonable time,” adding that the consultations will take public’s concerns about governance and corruption into account.
The no-confidence motion against Bolojan, initiated by the Social Democratic Party, the largest party in parliament, and backed by opposition parties and independents, secured 281 votes, exceeding the required threshold of 233.
Under the constitution, the Bolojan government will serve in a caretaker capacity limited to routine administrative duties. The interim government’s term cannot exceed 45 days. Failure to reach a consensus in political consultations among parliamentary parties could trigger a snap election.
