Putin Calls for UN Reform, Accuses Western Nations of Dominating Global Body

Moscow, Russia – Russian President Vladimir Putin has renewed his call for comprehensive reform of the United Nations, arguing that the global body has been unduly influenced by Western countries at the expense of other nations.

Speaking on Thursday, October 1, 2026, Putin criticized what he described as the disproportionate power wielded by Western nations within the UN system, particularly in the Security Council. He insisted that the current structure no longer reflects the geopolitical realities of the modern world and must be overhauled to ensure fairer representation for all regions.

According to the Russian leader, the UN risks losing its relevance and credibility if it continues to be perceived as a tool for advancing Western interests rather than a genuinely impartial arbiter of international affairs.

“The United Nations was created to serve all nations, not just a select few,” Putin was quoted as saying. “The time has come for a fundamental restructuring that gives voice to the Global South, Africa, Asia, and Latin America.”

Putin’s remarks come amid heightened tensions between Russia and Western powers over a range of issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, sanctions imposed on Moscow, and differing approaches to global security and governance.

The Russian president specifically took aim at the veto power held by the five permanent members of the Security Council — the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China — suggesting that the arrangement has allowed Western nations to block initiatives that do not align with their interests.

He called for expanded representation, particularly for African and Asian countries, arguing that their exclusion from permanent membership undermines the legitimacy of the council’s decisions.

Kremlin officials have indicated that Russia will push for discussions on UN reform at upcoming international summits, including the next session of the UN General Assembly.

Western diplomats have yet to respond formally to Putin’s latest comments. However, analysts note that previous calls for UN reform have often stalled due to disagreements among the permanent members, each of whom holds veto power over any proposed changes to the UN Charter.

Critics of Putin’s stance argue that Russia’s own use of its veto power to block resolutions concerning its actions in Ukraine and Syria undermines its credibility on the issue of fair representation.

Nonetheless, the debate over UN reform has gained traction in recent years, with growing calls from African, Latin American, and Asian nations for a more inclusive and representative global governance structure. The African Union has long advocated for permanent representation on the Security Council, a position that has garnered increasing international support.

Whether Putin’s renewed push will translate into concrete action remains to be seen, but the issue is likely to remain a contentious point in international diplomacy for the foreseeable future.
