Pub company set to open 2 new prison kitchens

Pub and brewing company Greene King is investing in two new kitchens to train more than 60 prison leavers into employment each year.

The firm had already announced it reached the landmark of hiring its 250th prison leaver through its so-called Releasing Potential programme in August – a scheme it said helps prisoners develop new skills in hospitality, with the chance of offering them a job.

It hopes to hire 400 prison leavers by the end of 2025 – and now it wants to open training kitchens at HMP Onley, in Rugby, to help with that goal.

Greene King’s chief executive Nick Mackenzie said the new kitchens are a “vital next step” in the programme.

“With pubs at the heart of local communities across the country, we are in a unique position to provide a range of jobs nationwide,” he added.
