Pope Francis has changed the Catholic Church in “so many ways” and has been a “significant figure”, says author Catherine Pepinster.
The writer of The Keys And The Kingdom: The British And The Papacy said that he spoke about marginalised people, war and the “freedom of people to practice their religion”.
He explains that the church has grown under Pope Francis’s leadership.
“He travelled so much. He spoke a very common language to people, he was a great communicator and he was able to engage with people.
“He was a very human leader… perhaps because he didn’t spend a career in the Vatican.”

Millions across the world are paying tribute to the pontiff today after his passing.
The Argentinian pope, who had part of one lung removed after a pulmonary infection as a young man, is a known workaholic who hosted a number of world leaders during his time as pontiff.
Here are just a few images offering a glimpse of the pope with heads of state…

The Pope’s final public appearance was just yesterday
The Pope made his final public appearance yesterday, blessing Easter crowds from his popemobile.
He blessed the thousands of faithful gathered to celebrate Easter Sunday at the Vatican.
The 88-year-old pontiff appeared frail as he was wheeled out onto the balcony over the entrance of St Peter’s Basilica, before being driven through the crowds of faithful gathered in St Peter’s Square.
He was met with cheers, applause and chants of “Viva il Papa” – meaning long live the Pope.
