Poll: Half of US adults say Israel has ‘gone too far’ in Gaza

Half of US adults believe Israel has “gone too far” in its military campaign in Gaza, according to a new poll from The Associated Press- NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

That is up from 40% in the same poll in November.

The poll was conducted from 25-28 January, which overlaps with the deaths of three US servicemen in a drone strike in Jordan.

How voters view Israel’s campaign

The poll shows growing disapproval among Republican voters, with 33% saying Israel’s military response has gone too far. That is up from 18% in November.

Fifty-two percent of independents share that view, up from 39%.

The figure stands at 62% of Democrats, roughly the same majority as in November.

Biden’s handling of the conflict

The poll also finds that support for President Biden’s handling of the conflict is ebbing slightly.

The poll shows 31% of US adults approve of Mr Biden’s handling of the conflict, including just 46% of Democrats.

Notably, about 70% of Democrats aged under 45 disapprove.

For context

The US has been a steadfast supporter of Israel both militarily and diplomatically since Hamas militants killed more than 1,200 people in the 7 October attacks.

However, global support for Israel has waned as the Palestinian death toll in the ensuing Israeli offensive in Gaza passes 27,000, according to the territory’s health ministry.

The US says it is pressing Israel to reduce its killing of civilians and allow in more humanitarian aid.

Meanwhile, President Biden is preparing a response to the killing of the three US servicemen on Sunday.

Mr Biden’s top diplomat, secretary of state Antony Blinken, said on Monday the US response “could be multi-levelled, come in stages, and be sustained over time”.
