More than 100 Palestinians killed in last 24 hours, Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry says

Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry is reporting that 112 Palestinians have been killed and another 148 injured over the last 24 hours.

It brings the total number of those killed in Gaza since the conflict began to 27,131, the ministry says.

A further 66,287 people have been injured.

Israel launched its ground and air offensive in Gaza in the wake of the 7 October attacks on southern Israel, which killed more than 1,200 people.

Israeli forces have been focusing their offensive on the southern city of Khan Younis in recent weeks.

In an earlier post, we reported that Israel may now turn its attention further south, after claiming to have dismantled Hamas in Khan Younis.

Defence minister Yoav Gallant suggested the offensive may now move to nearby Rafah, the region’s most southern city, where more than half of Gaza’s 2.3 million people are estimated to be sheltering from the Israeli bombardment (see post at 7.28am).

“We are achieving our missions in Khan Younis, and we will also reach Rafah and eliminate terror elements that threaten us,” Mr Gallant said.

Earlier, the United Nations humanitarian office warned that Rafah had become a “pressure cooker of despair” (see post at 11am).
