Pentagon cannot confirm reports of US retaliatory strikes

The Pentagon has said it cannot confirm reports the US has begun retaliatory strikes in the Middle East.

Fox News reported a US defence official as saying airstrikes have begun on Middle East targets from “multiple platforms”.

But ABC News said the strikes, which targeted Syria, were not launched by the US.

Both Central Command and the Pentagon cannot confirm the reports, according to our US partner network NBC News.

Strikes were still anticipated, ABC News cited sources as saying, in response to a drone attack on a military base in Jordan on Sunday that killed three US troops and wounded dozens more.

Washington blamed the Tower 22 attack, near the Syrian border, on Iran-backed militants.

The US response could form a “campaign” including strikes and cyber operations lasting for weeks, NBC News reported on Wednesday.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have previously said they will respond to any US threat.

Explosion sighted off coast of Yemen

Two explosions have been witnessed off the coast of Yemen, British maritime security firm Ambery has said.

A Liberia-flagged ship ceased transmitting tracking information following the explosions near Zubair Island, it said.

Yemen’s Houthis have frequently attacked commercial ships in the Red Sea since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war – though no link has yet been made to its militants in this instance.
