Israeli attacks in Syria and Lebanon risk creating flashpoints that ignite other conflicts, military analyst Simon Diggins has said.
He told Sky News that the tension and emotion involved in these military operations increases the likelihood of error.
This could prove crucial in areas like the diplomatic quarter of Damascus, he explained, which was reportedly hit with a missile today.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guards said four of its military advisers were killed in an Israeli strike on a multi-storey building in the Syrian capital, according to Iranian state TV.
“The real danger is that while these appear to be very targeted, very specific points that they [Israel] are engaging, given the tension and the emotion that’s there, that it turns into an error,” said Mr Diggins.
“The attack in Damascus was into a diplomatic area itself – you could easily hit a diplomatic building or something like that [by mistake], and then you’ve got a different level of violence.
“Reaction and counter-reaction could then take over.”
