Good morning from Meziesblog!

Below is a roundup of the key stories making headlines across Nigeria’s leading newspapers on Wednesday, June 3, 2026. From a major Christian body declaring a national mourning period over worsening insecurity to landmark achievements in maritime security and an African taekwondo championship, here are the stories that matter.

1. CAN Declares Three-Day National Mourning, Demands Security Emergency

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has declared a three-day national mourning period from June 12 to June 14 to honour victims of the country’s escalating insecurity, while also calling on the Federal Government to declare a national security emergency.

The decision was reached at the National Church Denominational Leaders Summit 2026 held in Abuja under the theme “The State of the Nation and the Way Forward”. In a communiqué read by CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association designated June 14 as “Black Sunday” across churches nationwide as a mark of solidarity with affected families.

The church leaders expressed “profound alarm” over escalating violence across Nigeria, including killings, kidnappings, mass abductions, and the destruction of communities. “CAN condemns in the strongest terms the barbaric acts of murder, beheading, torture, rape, abduction and forced displacement being perpetrated against innocent citizens,” the communiqué stated, adding that the Federal Government must deploy “all lawful measures necessary to restore security”.

The summit cited recent incidents of mass abductions and assaults in Oyo, Ogun, Borno, Kwara, and Kogi states, warning that the continued assault on human life poses a serious threat to national stability and development. CAN further called for the immediate acceleration of constitutional processes for the establishment of state police and other decentralised security structures.

Pastor Adeboye Issues 90-Day Ultimatum to Security Chiefs

Separately, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has issued a marching order to Nigeria’s security chiefs, giving them a 90-day deadline to eliminate terrorists across the country or resign. In a video shared on Tuesday, Adeboye expressed concern over the worsening security situation and urged the government to go beyond targeting terrorists to ensuring that those financing or supporting them are exposed and dealt with.

Kidnapping Protests Spread Across Major Cities

Nigerians from all walks of life, including members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and civil society organisations, held solidarity rallies across the country to draw attention to growing security concerns in the education sector. The protests called for the immediate and unconditional release of teachers and learners abducted by bandits in Oyo, Borno, and other parts of the country. Senate President Godswill Akpabio declared that Nigeria itself “remains captive” for as long as schoolchildren abducted in Oyo State are not freed.

2. INEC Launches Probe into Alleged Voter Data Breach as DSS Joins Investigation

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has launched a comprehensive investigation into allegations surrounding the unauthorised access and disclosure of information from its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) database, while the Department of State Services (DSS) has also waded into the alleged breach of the INEC portal.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said INEC has questions to answer over the unauthorised disclosure of information from its CVR database. INEC has assured Nigerians that there is no evidence of a cyberattack or compromise of its voter registration database.

3. Tinubu Returns to Abuja After Sallah Break, Set to Address National Assembly on Democracy Day

President Bola Tinubu has returned to Abuja after spending the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir break in Lagos. According to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the President’s plane touched down at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at exactly 5:17 pm on Tuesday, where he was received by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and other top government dignitaries.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee to coordinate activities for the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, with President Tinubu expected to address a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12. Other activities scheduled include a World Press Conference on June 4, special Juma’at prayers on June 5, an inter-denominational church service on June 7, a Democracy Day public lecture on June 9, and a Democracy Day Gala Night.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who chairs the committee, said Democracy Day provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices of those who fought for democratic governance, paying tribute to the late MKO Abiola and other pro-democracy activists.

4. APC Governors Defy Tinubu’s Re-election Agenda as 13 Lawmakers Defect

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is embroiled in a fresh crisis, with some governors defying President Bola Tinubu’s re-election agenda, according to New Telegraph. The House of Representatives resumed from its four-week recess on Tuesday to a wave of defections, as 13 lawmakers announced their movement to new political parties.

In a related development, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has declared his retirement from partisan politics, describing both President Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as “the devil and the devil”. “I find myself between the devil and the devil, whatever I choose, I end up with the devil. Meaning that as bad as Bola Tinubu is right now, I believe Atiku will make a worse president than Tinubu,” Lawal said during an interview on TVC.

5. Nigerian Navy Receives Three Warships as Tinubu Commissions Regional Anti-Piracy Force

The Nigerian Navy received a major boost in its maritime security operations with the addition of three new warships to its fleet and the launch of a Combined Maritime Task Force aimed at tackling emerging threats in the Gulf of Guinea. President Bola Tinubu, speaking at the International Fleet Review and Maritime Exercise held at the Eko Atlantic Waterfront in Lagos as part of activities marking the Navy’s 70th anniversary, described the service as “the most formidable naval force in Africa”.

“Our government’s commitment to the recapitalisation of the Nigerian Navy is further demonstrated today through the commissioning of three new vessels as we continue to promote indigenous shipbuilding capacity,” Tinubu said. The President noted that the Navy had evolved from a modest colonial marine outfit established in 1956 into a sophisticated maritime force, adding that the service’s emergence as Africa’s leading naval force reflects decades of operational excellence and strategic leadership.

Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, disclosed that the Combined Maritime Task Force comprises six countries within the Gulf of Guinea and would remain on standby to ensure maritime security in the region, building on the Gulf’s current zero-piracy status.

6. Manufacturers Spent N1.34tn on Alternative Energy in 2025

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has said that economic reforms introduced by the administration of President Bola Tinubu have significantly increased operating costs for manufacturers, pushing expenditure on alternative energy to N1.34tn in 2025 and worsening industrial performance.

MAN Director-General Segun Ajayi-Kadir explained that the removal of fuel subsidy in May 2023 caused logistics and distribution costs to rise by more than 300 per cent within weeks, while the increase in electricity tariffs for Band A consumers from about N68 per kilowatt-hour to between N209 and N225 per kilowatt-hour further compounded production challenges. Despite the sharp increase, power supply remained unstable due to persistent grid failures and system disruptions.

The association urged the Federal Government to provide affordable foreign exchange for productive activities, concessionary financing for industrial investments, stable electricity supply, and predictable trade policies. “Nigeria cannot achieve sustainable economic prosperity without a strong manufacturing base,” Ajayi-Kadir stated.

7. Nigeria Wins Three Gold Medals at African Taekwondo Championships

Nigeria’s medal haul at the 2026 African Taekwondo Championships in Bamako, Mali, has grown to seven, with the country claiming three gold medals, one silver, and three bronze at the World Taekwondo-sanctioned G-4 tournament.

The latest additions came from the Poomsae event on Tuesday, where Aderibigbe Faridah claimed gold in the Freestyle Poomsae category. She also teamed up with Salawudeen Abdulafeez to win silver in the Pair Poomsae event. Haruna Usman added a second gold in the Poomsae U-40 Male category, while Para-Taekwondo athlete Mathew Udom’s dominant display on Monday delivered the first gold in the -57kg Kyorugi category. Morocco dominated the Kyorugi event, sweeping eight gold medals to finish as overall champions.

8. Cricket: Nigeria Coach Calls 35 Players for Namibia Tri-Series

The new coach of Nigeria’s national men’s cricket team and High Performance Manager of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, Stephen Mangongo, has invited 35 players for a 14-day camp ahead of the 2026 Namibia Tri-Series. The Zimbabwean was unveiled as the helmsman of the Yellow Greens last Wednesday, signing a three-year deal with the NCF. His first assignment will be the Namibia Tri-Series, scheduled for June 18 to 29 at the FNB Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek, where Nigeria will face Namibia and Hong Kong, China. The squad, selected from the just-concluded Nigeria Super League, includes a blend of regulars led by captain Sylvester Okpe and Nigeria Super League MVP Isaac Danladi, as well as several new players.

9. Jumia CEO Positions Nigeria at Centre of Reform-Led Growth

At the Sohn Conference in New York, Chief Executive Officer of Jumia Group, Francis Dufay, offered a contrasting view on Nigeria’s economy, positioning the country at the centre of reform, growth, and longer-term stability. Dufay noted that Nigeria’s ongoing reform programme, particularly under President Bola Tinubu, has begun to define a new macroeconomic cycle, with measures such as exchange rate unification, fiscal adjustments, and broader economic restructuring gradually improving transparency and operational predictability for businesses.

He highlighted structural developments in Nigeria’s industrial base, pointing to the energy sector and the operational impact of the Dangote refinery as part of a broader economic repositioning. Dufay also underscored demographics as a key long-term growth driver, noting that more babies were born in Nigeria last year than across all of Europe.

10. Illegal Container Sales Cost Nigeria N600bn over 30 Years

Nigeria may have lost about N600bn within the last 30 years due to the sale of empty containers by some shipping companies, according to Mr Okey Ibeke, Principal Consultant of the International Trade Advisory Service. Speaking to members of the Shipping Correspondents Association of Nigeria in Apapa, Lagos, Ibeke explained that shipping lines bring empty containers into Nigeria as temporary imports and are expected to re-export them, but instead sell them without paying the required duties.

“If 250,000 containers were sold without duty payment at an average value of $1,500, Nigeria lost over $375m in duties and value-added tax, over N600bn at today’s rate, in 30 years. Money that should fund roads, schools, hospitals and debt service,” Ibeke said. He added that the act by shipping companies is a serious violation that threatens the naira, fiscal policy, government revenue, and economic sovereignty.
