New FDA-Approved Sunscreen Ingredient Could Transform Sun Protection in the U.S.

A major change is coming to the sunscreen market in the United States as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new active sunscreen ingredient for the first time in more than two decades. Dermatologists say the ingredient could provide consumers with more effective and cosmetically appealing options for daily sun protection.

Bemotrizinol: A Long-Used Ingredient Finally Available in the U.S.

The newly approved ingredient, bemotrizinol, also known as BEMT or PARSOL Shield, has been widely used in sunscreens in Europe, Asia, and Australia for years but was previously unavailable in U.S. sunscreen products.

The FDA’s approval marks the first new sunscreen ingredient added to the U.S. market since the late 1990s. Experts say the decision could help close a gap between American sunscreens and products available in other countries, where a wider range of ultraviolet (UV) filters has long been permitted.

Broad Protection Against UVA and UVB Rays

Bemotrizinol is a broad-spectrum chemical sunscreen filter designed to protect against both UVA and UVB radiation. UVA rays are associated with premature skin aging and contribute to skin cancer risk, while UVB rays are a major cause of sunburn.

Dermatologists say one of the ingredient’s advantages is its strong stability when exposed to sunlight, meaning it can maintain its protective ability longer than some older sunscreen filters. It is also valued because it absorbs UV radiation while remaining less likely to penetrate deeply into the skin.

A Solution to Common Sunscreen Complaints

Experts believe bemotrizinol could encourage more people to use sunscreen consistently because of its cosmetic benefits. Unlike some mineral sunscreens that can leave a visible white residue, products containing bemotrizinol are expected to apply more transparently and feel lighter on the skin.

Dermatologists note that sunscreen effectiveness depends not only on ingredients but also on whether people use the products regularly. A formula that feels comfortable and works well with different skin tones may improve daily sunscreen habits.

When Will Consumers Be Able to Buy It?

Although the FDA has approved bemotrizinol, products containing the ingredient are expected to arrive gradually rather than immediately. Companies are preparing new sunscreen formulations, with availability expected later in 2026.

The ingredient will initially be introduced under the brand name PARSOL Shield, with broader availability expected as additional manufacturers gain access after the initial exclusivity period.

Experts Say Sunscreen Habits Still Matter Most

While the approval represents a significant development in sun protection, dermatologists emphasize that the most important factor remains regular sunscreen use. Experts continue to recommend choosing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, applying it generously, and reapplying when exposed to prolonged sunlight, swimming, or sweating.

The arrival of bemotrizinol gives consumers a new option, but specialists say it should complement — not replace — established sun safety practices such as seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding excessive UV exposure.
