‘Multi-vehicle’ collision on icy Lake District mountain pass

Several vehicles were involved in a collision on a mountain pass in the Lake District, where roads have been covered in ice and snow, earlier Saturday afternoon.

Cumbria Police said they received numerous calls about a “multiple vehicle collision” on Wrynose Pass, which runs between the Duddon Valley and Little Langdale, shortly after 1pm.

The road was blocked at the time, officers said, and people were asked to avoid the area due to “a lot of ice and snow”.

No further updates have been given.

It comes after Westmorland and Furness Council said that both Wrynose pass and Hardknott Pass would be closed on Friday due to “severely icy conditions”.

Gritting crews had been out treating the roads in preparation for sub-zero temperatures, the council said, and work was set to continue throughout today.
