Most deaths in Gaza are combatants, deputy mayor of Jerusalem says

We’ve heard this morning from the deputy mayor of Jerusalem, Fleur Hassan-Nahoum.

She was asked about the number of civilians deaths inside Gaza.

“We don’t know if the death toll is high, you’re relying on numbers by Hamas,” she said, referring to the some 15,000 casualties reported by the Hamas-run health ministry inside the enclave.

She is then pressed by Kay Burley on what she thinks the toll really is.

“I’m sure it’s thousands, but we believe that most of them are combatants because we’ve been doing as much as we can to make it into a tweezer operation,” Ms Hassan-Nahoum said.

“We’re not playing a numbers game here, it’s very tragic what’s going on.”

Independent humanitarian organisations report massive casualties inside Gaza.

Ms Hassan-Nahoum is then asked about the Jerusalem shooting last week – which saw a local citizen mistakenly shot dead by Israeli forces after he intervened to stop Hamas gunmen from killing anyone else.

“This is just tragic. I don’t understand how this happened and in Israel, people are pretty angry,” she said.

“It’s awful and his family should be asking for an investigation.”
