IDF issues massive evacuation orders in southern Gaza

The Israel Defence Forces has urged people in areas of southern Gaza to evacuate.

The IDF released a map last week breaking the enclave into a number of small grid squares. It has been telling people in certain squares to move away amid the threat of attacks – though with intermittent internet, it has been questioned how effective these warnings are.

Avichay Adraee, the group’s Arab media spokesman, said today that the areas of al Mahatta, al Katiba, Hamad, al Satar, Bani Suhaila and Ma’an (which correspond to blocks 36, 47-54 and 219-221) should evacuate.

The neighbourhoods are all in or on approach to the major southern city of Khan Younis – where tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians have sought refuge in recent weeks.

They are being signposted to head to “the well-known IDP (internally displaced people) shelters in the neighborhoods of al Fukhari, al Shaboura, al Zuhur, and Tal al Sultan”.

Earlier, we brought you a report detailing that one of these “safe zones” at al Mawasi was completely underprepared and unsuitable for large numbers of displaced civilians (8.24am post).
