Gove fails to provide examples of diversity in armed forces threatening security
The first guest on Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips is Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove, and we start by asking about the defence secretary ordering a review of the Ministry of Defence’s diversity and inclusion policy.
It comes after it was reported that the Army wants to relax security clearance vetting for overseas recruits to boost diversity and inclusion.
Mr Gove says the aim is to “ensure we strike the right balance”, drawing on the wide array of talent in the UK.
But “also to make sure these policies operate in such a way as to ensure that political correctness or, some of the more ‘out there’ approaches that people take towards diversity, equity, and inclusion, don’t impair our ability to defend our borders and to make sure this country is secure”.
Asked for an example of diversity threatening security, Mr Gove says he won’t go into details on security policy, but said decisions made in the military must be “sharper and more acute than in other workplaces”.
However, he cannot provide any specific examples.
