Germany has warned an IDF offensive in the southern city of Rafah, Gaza, would cause “a humanitarian catastrophe”.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the military to develop a plan to evacuate the population of Rafah and destroy four Hamas battalions it says are deployed there.
But the German foreign minister, Annalena Baerbock, said the people of Gaza “cannot vanish into thin air”.
“Already, the suffering in Rafah is unfathomable. In an extremely confined space, 1.3 million people are seeking shelter from the fighting.
“A large-scale IDF offensive in Rafah would be a humanitarian catastrophe in the making. The people of Gaza cannot vanish into thin air.”
She called for another humanitarian pause to “alleviate civilian suffering” and to “finally get the hostages home”.
“How to get there will be on my agenda when I visit Israel next week,” she said.
