Doctors Without Borders has been trying to evacuate its staff from al Shifa for six days – but 137 of its colleagues and their families are still stuck inside the hospital.
In its latest statement, the medical aid group said its employees have been hearing “constant sounds of gunfire, shelling and drones” from inside the facility.
The fighting has been getting “very close”, it said, and thousands of other trapped civilians are “at risk of dying in the coming days, if not hours”.
“We can hear it when we speak with them on the phone. The evacuation route to southern Gaza remains unsafe,” the organisation’s representative for the region, Ann Taylor, said.
“They are terrified, they ran out of food several days ago and children have now started getting sick from drinking salty water, they must be evacuated now.”
On Tuesday, bullets were fired into a guest house at the hospital, the statement said.
Yesterday, an office building was hit by shrapnel and the water tank attached to its guest house was shelled.
