The court is shown footage of how various pedestrians tried to stop Paul Doyle’s car as it began to force its way through crowds on Dale Street.

“It’s obvious the crowd knew something awful was happening,” Paul Greaney KC says.

Several people can be seen attempting to strike the car, while the rear windscreen is smashed by a pedestrian, before another person throws a camping chair through the void created.

A clear cup is also seen being thrown at the car in separate footage, as people can be heard shouting at Doyle to stop the car.

“All of that Paul Doyle was able to see, but he ignored it and ploughed on,” Greaney says.

‘He cared only for wish to get through crowd – if he truly needed help, all he needed to do was stop’

Paul Greaney KC says that Paul Doyle claimed in subsequent police interviews after the attack that he had stopped his car once he realised he had hit a pedestrian.

Greaney says this was not true.

“He pushed on regardless, caring not for those he had hit,” he says.

“The defendant cared only for his own wish to get through that crowd.”

The court is shown a moment when Doyle’s Ford Galaxy was next to a police van.

The prosecution says this is one of several moments when police were visible and nearby – and if Doyle’s earlier claims to have been in fear were true, he could have taken the opportunity to seek help.

“If he had truly needed help… all Paul Doyle needed to do was stop,” Greaney adds.

“Instead of stopping, the defendant drove on, striking more and more people and causing more and more injuries.”

Girl, 10, and woman, 60, both struck as car sped through crowd

Dashcam footage from Paul Doyle’s car shows more individuals being struck during the attack.

One was a 10-year-old girl who was hit despite her father trying to push her out of the way, Paul Greaney KC says.

She suffered minor injuries from the impact.

Another victim was Jacqueline McClaren, who was struck on the other side of the Ford Galaxy.

Further footage from moments later shows the 60-year-old lying on the road in a red jacket with other pedestrians rushing to help her.

Some people in the court were looking away as the footage of the impacts was played out.

‘Hero’ pedestrian climbed into Doyle’s car and forced it to stop

Paul Greaney KC next describes the actions of Daniel Barr, who he describes as a “hero” of the day.

Barr, an ex-soldier, had “bravely” jumped into the back of Paul Doyle’s Ford Galaxy and placed the vehicle into park.

Barr was walking up Water Street when he noted the defendant’s Ford Galaxy in the distance, Greaney says, noting the crowd’s attitude changed from “joyous to desperate”.

Doyle’s vehicle then stopped next to Barr “all of a sudden”.

“Daniel Barr instinctively pulled open the rear passenger-side door and climbed in. He did so with the intention of stopping the driver,” the prosecutor says.

Barr leaned forward and moved the gear into “park” and “held it as hard as he could”.

Greaney added: “The Galaxy did not stop immediately, but in the end it did.”
