Five of the six crew on board the Coast Guard aircraft have been killed, according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK.
The Japanese Coast Guard said the pilot of its plane had escaped.
NHK reported the five other crew members had been found dead.
‘It was a hell’: Passenger describes moment plane bursts into flames
Swede Anton Deibe, 17, who was a passenger on the Japan Airlines plane, has described what happened.
“The entire cabin was filled with smoke within a few minutes,” he told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.
“We threw ourselves down on the floor. Then the emergency doors were opened and we threw ourselves at them.
“The smoke in the cabin stung like hell. It was a hell. We have no idea where we are going so we just run out into the field. It was chaos.”
Mr Deibe said he was traveling with his parents and sister.
What is the aircraft thought to have crashed with the Japan Airlines flight?
We’re starting to get more details on the Coast Guard aircraft believed to have been involved in a collision with the burning Japan Airlines flight.
The Coast Guard aircraft was flight MA-722, a Bombardier Dash-8.
The aircraft had six crew members on board, including the pilot.
The pilot managed to escape and the five other crew members have been found, but their condition is unknown.
Pilot and aviation consultant Tim Atkinson says the Bombardier Dash-8 is typically a short-haul airliner with about 50 to 80 seats.
For an idea of its size and uses, it would be used for flights such as those from Southampton to Edinburgh.
Mr Atkinson said the planes weigh 20-something tonnes and are “not anything like the size of the A350s” but are “sizeable enough to have a significant volume of fuel on board”.

Passengers watch burning plane
Passengers evacuated from the Japan Airlines flight remain on an observation deck at Tokyo’s Haneda airport as fire crews tackle the blaze.
All managed to escape without life-threatening injuries.
