The UN says Israel is “delaying and denying” access to Gaza for its agency workers, meaning they cannot deliver vital aid, fuel and medical supplies meant for the enclave’s civilian population.
The update cited reports from the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), which said it had experienced hold-ups and denials for the past three days.
“The security situation, access, transport and deconfliction remain extremely challenging, especially for hospitals in the northern governorates,” the OCHA report said.
Israel claims it allows significant quantities of aid in, but that Hamas confiscates it in order to create the illusion of a humanitarian crisis.
Just 13 of Gaza’s hospitals were “partially functioning”, with the other 26 out of action, the UN report added, citing the World Health Organisation.
“Highlighting the desperate medical situation throughout Gaza, WHO reported that only 13 out of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are still partially functional; nine in the south and four in the north,” it said.
