We’re updating this post as developments happen.
- Iran has vowed to fight on until “complete victory” after dismissing as “fake news” Donald Trump’s claim that the US and Iran had “very good and productive” talks to end the war;
- The US is reportedly sending 3,000 more troops – from an airborne assault unit – to the Middle East, despite Trump’s talk of a possible peace;
- Israel also said it would press ahead with strikes in Iran and Lebanon, where it is fighting the Iran-backed Hezbollah on a second front. Israel plans to seize swathes of southern Lebanon to create a “defensive buffer” in its battle with the militants, its defence minister has said;
- Iran and Israel continue to exchange fire, with Iran launching missiles at Tel Aviv and Israel striking Tehran. Iran also continued retaliatory strikes against US Gulf allies, including Bahrain and Kuwait;
- Trump claimed last night that there was a “very good chance” of a deal between the US and Iran to end the war after he announced he had postponed his threatened strikes on Iranian power plants following those “productive” talks;
- The price of oil remains over $100 a barrel after a dramatic fall yesterday following Trump’s postponement announcement on energy strikes;
- There is scepticism across financial markets over whether Trump’s reversal yesterday is genuine or if the US president moved to try to calm escalating oil prices.
