Iran claims two C-130 planes and two Blackhawks shot down – here’s what we are hearing

Iran is now claiming that two American C-130 transport aircraft and two Blackhawk helicopters were shot down.

Although the situation is slightly unclear at this stage, here is what we are hearing.

US officials have said American forces had to destroy two of their own aircraft during the rescue mission, according to the Wall Street Journal.

In his post celebrating the success of the rescue mission, Donald Trump said there were no deaths  – but did not mention aircraft.

“The fact that we were able to pull off both of these operations, without a SINGLE American killed, or even wounded, just proves once again, that we have achieved overwhelming Air Dominance and Superiority over the Iranian skies,” the US president said.

Now, Iranian media have released images and video of a crash site around 45km (28 miles) south of the Iranian city of Isfahan.

Sky News verified this footage by matching the mountains pictured to nearby ridgelines, and cross-referencing the stills and video footage.

An official told the Reuters news agency that US forces had to destroy at least one aircraft during the rescue mission because it had malfunctioned.

The Associated Press news agency reports that US troops blew up two transport planes due to a technical malfunction, forcing them to bring in additional aircraft to complete the rescue.

The circumstances leading to the destruction of the aircraft have not yet been independently confirmed. The images show components from at least one large propeller-driven plane and helicopter.
