Hong Kong Stocks Rise as Internet Shares Lift the Market

Hong Kong’s stock market posted gains on Wednesday, outperforming mainland Chinese markets as major internet and technology companies attracted buying interest. While mainland exchanges remained under pressure from continued selling in artificial intelligence-related stocks, Hong Kong’s benchmark index benefited from strength in large-cap technology firms.

Market analysts said investors appeared more optimistic about Hong Kong-listed internet companies despite broader caution surrounding AI investments. Reuters reported that Hong Kong gained on internet shares even as “China stocks slip as AI-linked selloff deepens.”

Financial markets are also closely watching this week’s U.S. Federal Reserve policy meeting, which could influence global investment sentiment and capital flows into Asian markets.

Hong Kong Continues Recovery After Typhoon Noul

Hong Kong continues to return to normal operations following the disruption caused by Typhoon Noul over the weekend.

The powerful storm forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights, caused transport disruptions and brought strong winds across the territory. Airport operations have largely resumed, although airlines continue to clear backlogs created by earlier cancellations.

Authorities had previously suspended many public services as the typhoon approached. According to earlier official reports, weather warning signals have since been lowered as the storm weakened after making landfall in Guangdong Province.

Police Investigate Violent Crime Cases

Hong Kong police are investigating several serious criminal incidents reported today, including a stabbing case in Mong Kok and a separate drug trafficking investigation at Hong Kong International Airport.

Local media reported that a mainland Chinese man suffered neck injuries during an attack inside a building in Mong Kok. In another case, customs officers seized narcotics with an estimated street value of around HK$13 million at the airport as part of ongoing anti-drug enforcement efforts. Investigations into both incidents remain ongoing.

Investors Await Key Global Economic Decisions

Hong Kong investors remain focused on major international economic events expected later this week, particularly the U.S. Federal Reserve’s interest rate announcement.

Analysts believe any changes in monetary policy or signals about future rate movements could influence Hong Kong’s financial markets, currency conditions and investment activity. The city’s role as one of Asia’s leading financial centres means global policy decisions continue to have a significant impact on investor sentiment.

Authorities Continue Monitoring Weather Conditions

Although Typhoon Noul has moved inland, weather authorities continue monitoring regional conditions following days of severe weather across southern China.

Emergency services remain on alert as heavy rainfall continues in parts of Guangdong and neighbouring provinces. Hong Kong authorities have urged residents to stay informed through official weather updates should conditions change, although no severe warnings comparable to those issued during the typhoon are currently in effect.
