Holes visible on plane reportedly shot down by Russia – US official says ‘too early for conclusion’

Holes can be seen on the side of the Azerbaijani Airlines plane reportedly shot down by Russian air defence systems yesterday.

Images from the crash site show what appears to be shrapnel damage littered across the tail section of the plane, which went down in the Kazakh city of Aktau.

‘Early indications’ that Russian air defence system struck Azerbaijani plane – US official

A US official has told the Reuters news agency that there are “early indications” the Azerbaijani Airlines plane that crashed in Kazakhstan yesterday was hit by a Russian anti-aircraft system.

The official, who was speaking on the condition of anonymity, added that if the indications turn out to be accurate, they would underscore Russian recklessness in its invasion of Ukraine.

Investigations are ongoing into the cause of the crash, which killed 38 people.

Russia’s aviation watchdog earlier said the crash may have been caused by a bird strike.

A spokesperson for the Kremlin said it was “wrong to build hypotheses before the conclusions of the investigation”.
