NADMO Confirms 18 Deaths as Floods Ravage Central Region

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has confirmed that recent environmental disasters, including flooding, mudslides, landslides, and building collapses, have resulted in 18 deaths across 13 districts in the Central Region. The severe weather incidents have affected more than 5,000 people and left 377 individuals internally displaced following the destruction of 58 buildings.

Central Regional Director of NADMO, Kwesi Dawood, stated that the organisation is currently conducting a comprehensive needs assessment across the affected communities to determine the level of assistance required. Dawood revealed that NADMO’s emergency relief supplies have been severely depleted by consecutive flood-related incidents since May. Consequently, the organisation is appealing to corporate entities, non-governmental organisations, faith-based groups, and private individuals for urgent donations of relief items.

To mitigate the risk of waterborne diseases and potential epidemics, NADMO is partnering with the Hydrological Authority, National Security, Environmental Health Departments, and the Ghana Health Service to fumigate affected areas. This public health measure became necessary after floodwaters inundated several local cemeteries.

Speaking to Citi News on Monday, June 22, Dawood elaborated on the fumigation plans: “We are also collaborating with other institutions in the region to embark on fumigation in some sections of the flooded areas. We had some flooding in cemeteries in the area, and when issues like this happen, we have to do the fumigation to curb the likes of water-borne diseases and other health risks that we do not want”.

Dawood also commended the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service for their critical roles in emergency response and rescue operations during the crisis. “We want to commend the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service for the extraordinary support they gave us over the week, which brought about the saving of lives of those affected. Their efforts have gone a long way in reducing the fatalities and casualties,” he stated.

Black Stars Braced for England World Cup Showdown

All eyes are on Foxborough, Massachusetts, as Ghana’s Black Stars prepare to face England in a crucial Group L encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match, scheduled for Tuesday at Gillette Stadium, carries enormous significance for both sides as they battle for a place in the Round of 32.

Ghana head into the clash buoyed by a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening game, with Caleb Yirenkyi’s solitary strike securing all three points for Carlos Queiroz’s side. England, meanwhile, opened their campaign with a commanding 4-2 victory over Croatia.

Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has acknowledged the magnitude of the challenge while insisting the team is prepared and determined to make the nation proud. Speaking to the media on Monday ahead of the highly anticipated showdown, Ayew said the mood in camp remains positive, stressing that the players are fully focused on securing another positive result.

“It has been positive, and it has been good. Everyone is ready for the next game. We’ve won just one game, and we are not yet done,” the 34-year-old said. “We still have two more important games to play. We want to ensure that we do our best, enjoy ourselves, and get positive results”.

Ayew admitted England will provide a stern test but believes facing top opposition is part of the World Cup experience. “It’s going to be a tough game, and we all know that. That’s why we are at the World Cup – you have to play against the best teams,” he added. “We are ready for the challenge, and we are going to do our best to make ourselves proud and make our country and families proud”.

Reflecting on Ghana’s opening win over Panama, the Leicester City forward noted that no match at the World Cup comes easy. “There are no easy games at the World Cup. Every game is difficult because you play against the best teams. Obviously, it was a difficult game against Panama, but in the end, we got the three points, and that’s the most important thing”. “Now we are playing against England, and it’s going to be really difficult, but we will see what happens. We will put on a show and make everybody proud”.

Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz has sent a strong message to England, framing the contest as “33 million Ghanaians vs the Three Lions”. While the Black Stars are seen as underdogs for Tuesday’s encounter, Queiroz believes the country will be backed by the 33 million Ghanaians supporting the national team.

“We have a great match in front of us,” Queiroz told a press conference. “This is what we are looking for all our lives: to be in the right environment at the right time and to play against the best players in the world”.

“We know how England play. They have excellent players, they have the experience of their Premier League. They have intensity, but we know how we can control this. We know they have three lions, but we have 33 million lions”.

The Portuguese trainer is poised to lead the Black Stars to the Round of 32 and believes that getting a positive result against England will set the tone for success in North America. “We are in this competition for points. It is to get the points in order to qualify. That is the most important thing for us,” he continued. “Trust me, there will be huge entertainment on the pitch. We belong to the entertainment business. We are going to fight, play, and enjoy ourselves. I guarantee you the match will remain in the memories and hearts of people when it finishes”.

Michael Oti Adjei, General Manager for Sports at Media General, believes Ghana’s chances of progressing in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup will remain intact even if the Black Stars suffer defeat against England. Speaking in an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, Oti Adjei said Ghana’s final group game against Croatia could still provide a pathway to the next stage.

“I hope Ghana doesn’t lose against England tomorrow [Tuesday, June 23], but if we lose, Ghana still goes into the game against Croatia with a big opportunity to reach the next stage,” he said. According to him, the possibility of qualification regardless of the outcome against England could allow the Black Stars to approach the match with less pressure.

“For me, that is what will work to our advantage, because it allows us to play with a certain level of freedom,” he stated. Oti Adjei urged the team to focus on delivering their best performance against England rather than viewing the match as decisive for their campaign. “Tomorrow, show up against England, put in your best. The game against England will not define Ghana’s future in this tournament. It’s important,” he added.

A win or even a draw against England could be enough to secure Ghana’s place in the knockout stages with a game to spare. The Black Stars will round off their Group L campaign against Croatia on June 27, 2026, as they continue their bid to reach the World Cup knockout phase for the first time since their historic run to the quarter-finals in 2010.
