From Garage Mechanic to Galala King: Daddy Showkey Opens Up on Discovering His Singing Talent

Veteran Nigerian musician Daddy Showkey has shared the inspiring story of how he discovered his singing talent, revealing that it was in a humble garage—not a recording studio—that he found his true calling as a solo artiste.

The galala music pioneer opened up about his journey to success, recounting the challenging period following the breakup of the Pretty Busy Boys, the group that first brought him into the spotlight. Speaking candidly, Daddy Showkey said he initially struggled to figure out his next move after the group disbanded, even considering a career in the military before eventually finding his path in music.

“After the Pretty Busy Boys, everybody went solo. Me, I was thinking, what will I do? I went back to the garage,” he said. “First of all, I wanted to join the army… but the training was too much for me”.

He returned to Lagos and went back to the garage, a place that would prove to be the turning point in his life. “It was in the garage that I discovered that I have the potential to be a singer,” Daddy Showkey revealed.

The musician also shared a powerful message about success and destiny, stressing that achievement is not reserved for a select few. “God does not choose who will succeed. You cannot say God has chosen only one person to succeed. God wants to bless everybody,” he said.

Daddy Showkey’s story serves as a testament to the fact that success can emerge from the most unexpected places, and that perseverance in the face of uncertainty can lead to extraordinary discoveries.
