French police used tear gas on banned pro-Palestinian protesters

Police in France have used tear gas and water cannons on protesters attending a banned pro-Palestinian demonstration in Paris.

Hundreds of people gathered in the capital to condemn the attacks carried out by Israel on Gaza, despite such rallies being banned by the government earlier today.

Demonstrators chanted “Israel murderer” and “Macron accomplice” as they moved through the streets.

French President Emmanuel Macron has previously condemned the deadly attack by the Palestinian militant Hamas group and voiced solidarity with Israel.

Earlier today, he urged people to stay united and refrain from bringing the Israel-Hamas conflict home.

France is home to Europe’s largest Muslim and Jewish communities and the Middle East conflict has often stoked domestic tensions in the past.
