Everything we know – and what we don’t know – after Minneapolis shooting

The second news conference of the day has now wrapped up after the shooting at the Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis.

Let’s run through what we know, and point out what we’re still waiting to hear…

The victims

  • Two children aged eight and 10 have been killed in the shooting as they sat on pews;
  • 17 others were injured, including 14 children;
  • Dr Thomas Wyatt at Hennepin Healthcare Hospital said doctors are “dealing with gunshot wounds from a high-velocity weapon”;
  • Three adults in their 80s are among those injured in the attack;
  • All of those injured are expected to survive, Minneapolis police chief Brian O’Hara said in the latest update.

The killer

  • The FBI has confirmed that the killer has been identified as Robin Westman, a male born as Robert Westman;
  • It added that the shooting is being investigated as an “act of domestic terrorism” and a “hate crime against Catholics”;
  • O’Hara said the killer, who is 23, had scheduled a manifesto to be released on YouTube;
  • He said the manifesto “appeared to show him at the scene and included some disturbing writings” – adding that it has since been taken down with assistance from the FBI.

What we don’t know

  • Other than the manifesto, O’Hara said he still has no information to share about a motive for the shooting;
  • He also said he couldn’t confirm a relationship between the suspect or his family and the church;
  • We’re also waiting to hear the names of the victims.
