The EU is exploring the possibility of a maritime humanitarian aid corridor via Cyprus.
European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen will travel to meet with the president of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, on Friday.
The government of the island, located south of Turkey and west of Syria, has campaigned for months for the creation of a sustained, one-way sea route carrying aid directly to Gaza.
It is the closest European Union member state to the region, located 230 miles northwest of Gaza.
“Our efforts are focused on making sure that we can provide aid to Palestinians. We all hope that this opening [of the corridor] will take place very soon,” said Ms von der Leyen’s spokesperson.
