Directors pay tribute to ‘one of the most engrossing actors of all time’

More tributes are pouring in for Donald Sutherland, with director Edgar Wright saying the “screen legend” had an “always fascinating screen presence”.

“So sorry to see you go Donald but what a legacy you leave behind,” said Mr Wright, who directed films like Shaun of the Dead and Baby Driver.

“He starred in two of my very favourite and most influential films – Don’t Look Now and the 1978 Invasion Of The Body snatchers.

“But that is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of his legendary filmography; a funny, laconic, but also intense and dramatic presence in so many memorable movies, starting with his break-through in The Dirty Dozen, and then on an incredible run in the 70s, 80s and beyond.”

He continued: “I even adore his very early appearances in Dr Terror’s House Of Horrors and The World Ten Times Over, as well as his very silly cameo in Kentucky Fried Movie.”

Director Ron Howard, of Apollo 13 and Arrested Development, said he was “blessed” to work with Sutherland in the 1991 film Backdraft.

“One of the most intelligent, interesting and engrossing film actors of all time,” he said.

“Incredible range, creative courage and dedication to serving the story and the audience with supreme excellence.”
