Blinken heading to Ukraine for urgent meetings

US secretary of state Antony Blinken is heading to Europe for urgent meetings on Ukraine with NATO and European Union officials ahead of Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

The state department will hold talks in Brussels on Wednesday on how to boost support for Ukraine, as Trump has suggested US military assistance to the country fighting off Russia’s invasion could be severely curtailed after he takes office.

After less than a day in Brussels, Mr Blinken will then fly to Peru and Brazil to join outgoing President Joe Biden at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

For context: Trump’s victory last week has raised questions over future US support for Ukraine.

The US has been a key player in Ukraine’s fight against Russia, providing billions of pounds in military aid.

But there are now concerns that Trump’s return to office could lead to this support being withdrawn.
