Biden’s parting message: ‘Some things are more important than staying in power’

“Let me close with this,” says Joe Biden, as he ends his last speech to the UN General Assembly as US president.

“We must never forget who we’re here to represent.”

He looks back on his decision not to seek a second term as leader: “As much as I love the job, I love my country more. I decided after 50 years of public service, it’s time for a new generation of leadership to take my nation forward.

“My fellow leaders, let us never forget some things are more important than staying in power. It’s your people.”

He continues: “The future will be won by those who unleash the full potential of their people to breathe free, to think freely, to innovate, to educate, to live and love openly without fear. That’s the soul of democracy.”

Before leaving the stage for the final time, he adds: “My fellow leaders, there’s nothing that’s beyond our capacity if we work together. Let’s work together.”

Hezbollah ‘leading you to brink of abyss’, Netanyahu tells Lebanon

Benjamin Netanyahu has sent a second message to the people of Lebanon after he warned citizens yesterday to “stay out of harm’s way”.

In a post on X, the Israeli prime minister said: “We will continue striking Hezbollah. Anyone who has a missile in their living room and a rocket in their garage will not have a home.”

Earlier on, the Israeli military said it had found ammunition in people’s homes.

Mr Netanyahu called on the Lebanese people to “rid themselves” from the “grip” of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

“Our war is not with you, our war is with Hezbollah,” he said from an IDF intelligence base at an undisclosed location.

“Nasrallah is leading you to the brink of the abyss.

“Rid yourself from Nasrallah’s grip, for your own good.”

His comments come as the Israeli military says it has killed another Hezbollah commander in Beirut – see our previous post for more details.
