Biden: ‘Very close’ to final hostage deal – at least 48 Palestinians killed in 24 hours

At least 48 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli airstrikes in the past 24 hours, according to Palestinian officials.

Seven people were killed in two airstrikes in Gaza City, while six others were killed in the Burejj and Nuseirat refugee camps.

Palestinian authorities say the deaths came as Israel battled Hamas-led militants.

Details on the other deaths have not been released and there has been no official comment from the Israeli military.

There have been limited pauses in the fighting in Gaza to allow for a childhood polio vaccination campaign this week.

Mourners out in Jerusalem for hostage’s funeral

We reported earlier that the funeral of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, one of the six hostages found to have been killed in Gaza last week, is taking place today.

Ahead of the ceremony at 4pm (2pm UK), people lined the streets of Jerusalem carrying Israeli flags.

During the service, Israeli President Isaac Herzog is set to give a eulogy.

Biden: ‘Very close to final hostage deal’

Joe Biden told reporters that a final hostage deal between Israel and Hamas is “very close” while on his way to a meeting with the team that has been trying to negotiate the release of the remaining hostages in Gaza.

He also criticised Benjamin Netanyahu, responding “no” when asked whether the Israeli prime minister was “doing enough” to secure a deal.

The negotiation team is about to brief Mr Biden and Kamala Harris, the vice-president, on the latest developments in the White House situation room.

It comes after one of the six hostages found killed in Gaza last week was revealed as US citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin.
