Biden should step aside or risk ‘political suicide’, ex-diplomat says

Joe Biden should “give way to the next generation” and stop “stubbornly sticking on”, a former US diplomat has said.

Brett Bruen, former White House director of global engagement under Barack Obama, said the president of America “cannot just be strong on the teleprompter”.

“You have to be strong in those debates. You have to be strong at all hours,” he told our special world programme.

He praised Mr Biden’s work as vice-president under Mr Obama, but said there was “too much at stake” in the election for him to continue “stubbornly sticking on for the sake of his ego”.

Mr Bruen called it “political suicide” and said it was putting the US in “peril”.

He said that it was not just about Mr Biden’s age, saying he was “never particularly good at retaining a lot of information”.

Obama: ‘Bad debate nights happen’

Barack Obama has shown support for Joe Biden in his first public comments about the presidential debate.

In a post to X, the former president, whose served with Mr Biden as vice-president, said: “Bad debate nights happen. Trust me, I know.”

He added that the election was “still a choice between someone who has fought for ordinary folks his entire life and someone who only cares about himself”.

Posting a link to the Biden campaign website, Mr Obama said “so much is at stake” in the November election.
