August Bank Holiday 2026: Supermarket Opening Hours From Aldi to Waitrose

If you’re planning a last-minute shop this August bank holiday, it pays to check the opening times before you head out. Most major supermarkets are reducing their hours today (Monday, 31 August), though smaller convenience-style branches are largely staying open as usual.

To save you the hassle, here is a complete rundown of what the biggest chains have announced. Keep in mind that individual store times can vary, so it’s always worth using each retailer’s online store finder to confirm your local branch.

Lidl

Lidl stores outside the M25 and in Wales will be operating on reduced hours, open from 8am until 8pm. Branches in London and across Scotland, however, will stick to their normal schedules, with most closing around 10pm or later.

Marks & Spencer

M&S opening times vary by location today. Some larger stores will run as usual, while others – including many M&S foodhalls – will shut a little earlier than normal. The safest bet is to use the chain’s store locator for your nearest branch.

Tesco

Tesco has confirmed that all its large stores will close by 6pm today. A number of Express shops – particularly those in central London – will also shut at 6pm, though most other Express branches across the UK are expected to operate normally.

Aldi

Aldi stores nationwide will open at 8am and close between 8pm and 10pm, depending on the location. Shoppers are advised to check the specific bank holiday hours for their local Aldi using the chain’s store finder.

Morrisons

Most large Morrisons stores will close earlier today, with the majority running from 7am to 8pm. Its smaller Daily shops, however, will remain open as usual.

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s larger supermarkets – along with the Argos branches inside them – will close early, with most operating between 7 or 8am and 8pm. Its smaller Local stores will stay open at normal hours.

Co-op

Co-op branches will operate normally today, with many staying open late and a handful of locations continuing to run 24-hour service.

Asda

Large Asda stores and Asda Living shops are expected to close earlier than usual, with most open between 8am and 10pm. The smaller Asda Express branches will remain open as normal, while Asda Express Petrol stores will run 24 hours.

Waitrose

Most larger Waitrose stores are expected to close early today, while its Little Waitrose convenience branches will operate as normal. Because times vary significantly from store to store, checking your local branch is strongly recommended.

Whether you’re stocking up for a barbecue or just grabbing a few essentials, a quick check online could save you a wasted trip. Most supermarkets are keeping their smaller convenience formats open, but the larger stores are cutting hours – so plan accordingly.
