General Statement of Duties: Massachusetts Maritime Academy’s Mariner Credentialing office is searching for an energetic STCW assessor, and data manager.  The ideal candidate values a team-driven environment focused on customer service, accuracy, and attention to detail. A key part of the role is engaging with faculty and other assessors to ensure records-keeping systems are up-to-date and meeting with cadets to communicate their progress toward program completion. The department’s assist ant director (AD) will serve as a subject matter expert in credentialing regulations and assi st the director in implementing a USCG credentialing process personalized for each license-track student. In addition, the AD will conduct record& nbsp;keeping in support of the USCG audit process, participate in program development , and assist with a busy office. 

Responsibilities: The Assistant Director supports  the Director in departmental functions to:

  • Manage US Coast Guard licensing records.
  • Teach and assess STCW classes
  • Interact daily with students to assist them on their path towards becoming a licensed mariner
  • Engage with faculty to ensure timely and proper data input.
  • Act as a subject matter expert on the national and STCW requirements for obtaining a credential
  • Update software, record assessments, and prepare for the Coast Guard’s audit& ;nbs p;every five years and maintain systems in the intervening years.
  • Conduct meetings and/or training sessions from time to time outside the normal working day.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine Transportation.
  • Holds or held an unlimited tonnage deck or engine license.
  • Proficient in computer and software literacy, data management, and record-keeping.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with software systems commonly used in higher education, i.e. Elucian and Informer.
  • Background in higher education and/or past teaching experience.
  • Familiar with the Code of Federal Regulations, SOLAS, and STCW Code
  • Have at least three years of experience sailing commercially as a licensed officer
